Knox County Sheriff’s Office Detective Mike Dalton says arson is the cause of the fire at the Harris Chapel Baptist Church. Fire destroyed the historic church at 6539 Twin Creek Road Wednesday morning. Dalton said a rear door to the church was forced open and the fire was started in the sanctuary. Investigators aren’t sure what was used to start the fire. They are sending evidence to the ATF lab where it will be analyzed. It may take several weeks before the results are known.
Meanwhile, the KCSO, ATF, and the Knox County Fire Marshall’s Office are continuing the investigation.
A man wanted for shooting two people early Sunday morning in Knox County walked into the police department in Alpharetta, Georgia around 1:00 p.m. on Monday and gave himself up. Thirty-two year old Marvin Matthews is accused of shooting his estranged wife 34 year old Tiffanie Matthews and her boyfriend, 33 year old Sherman Hawkins in the bedroom of a house at 1623 Cathedral Lane around 6:00 a.m. The Knox County Sheriff’s Office will pick up Matthews as soon as the paperwork is completed, either late today or tomorrow. The KCSO has taken out three warrants against Matthews, which include two for Attempted First Degree Murder ($500,000 each) and one for Especially Aggravated Burglary ($100,000). Because there was an order of protection against Matthews by his estranged wife, Judge Bill Swann today ordered no bond for Matthews.
Matthews kicked in a door to the house and then the bedroom and began shooting at the victims with a hand gun. Tiffanie Matthews was hit in the abdomen and Hawkins in the hip and abdomen. They’re being treated at the University of Tennessee Hospital. Three children were also in the house at the time of the shooting, but were not injured. One called 911 for help.
Matthews has a criminal history of DUI in 2001 and resisting arrest in 2004. He also has two charges of vandalism pending from April and May of 2009 where he kicked in doors at the Cathedral Lane house and cut the tires on the car belonging to his estranged wife.
The Hollywood Spa in West Knox County is out of business after an on-going investigation by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office resulted in the arrest of the owner and one employee. An undercover officer went into the business at 10932 Murdock Road Thursday afternoon and 58 year old Chin Kyun Kim offered sexual services to him. She was charged with promoting prostitution and her bond was set at $1,000. She gave a Sacramento, California address.

A suspected sex offender on the run from Georgia authorities for the past 8 years was nabbed Tuesday afternoon in a West Knoxville store. Fifty-three year old Larry William Whitley has been living in Knoxville for the past eight years under the alias of Robert Moon. He fled from Douglasville, Georgia to avoid prosecution for probation violation, sex offense against a child and child molestation.
KCSO Detective Jim Albanese and a Douglas County Deputy on the U.S. Marshall’s Task Force out of Georgia found Whitley at the Wal-Mart on Walbrook where he has been working. As he tried to run from the officers, he fell into a clothes rack and sustained some facial injuries. He was taken into custody and charged with Fugitive from Justice. He is being held without bond at the Knox County Detention Facility until Georgia authorities have him extradited back to Douglas County sometime Wednesday.
