The Major Crimes Unit of the Knox County Sheriff's Office investigates all violent crimes against people, including homicide, rape, assault, robbery and car-jackings. During calendar year 2007, the Major Crimes Unit recorded 1,253 cases for investigation. Six homicides were investigated and solved. The unit continues to have an impressive rate of solving crime, especially regarding homicides – the most difficult crime to investigate. The Unit has solved nearly 95% of its homicides in the past decade, compared to a national average of about 65%.
