State Senators Jamie Woodson and Tim Burchett presented
a check to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office SCAN (Senior Citizen Awareness
Network) Program on Monday. The check for $15,000 will be used to purchase
equipment and training for the Scan volunteers.
SCAN was organized in 1996 to provide services to the
elderly and disabled in our community and help relieve the uniformed patrol
officers from performing the time consuming tasks. Six days a week, the
volunteers check on the safety and security of older citizens who have enrolled
in the free program. Currently, the program has over 80 volunteers and
approximately 225 recipients.
Volunteers provide confirmation of personal well-being,
crime prevention information, victim outreach, companionship, conduct home
security surveys, and provide advocacy for the elderly with local resource
agencies such as the Office on Aging and Adult Protective
Services.
SCAN volunteers are also the eyes and ears to the KCSO
by immediately reporting to 911 any crimes in progress or emergency situations
observed.
