no_carjack.jpgCarjacking is a crime of opportunity.  Sophisticated alarms and improved locking devices make it harder for thieves to steal an unoccupied car.  The carjacker wants the keys readily available and the car door unlocked for a quick getaway.

The “Bump” and Carjack:

One scheme used by carjackers and their accomplice is to bump a car from behind to get the driver to pull over or stop.  The carjacker will crash into the back of a vehicle at a low speed and “bump” with enough force to make the victim believe an accident has occurred.  Typically both drivers will get out of the vehicle to access the damage.  At this point the carjacker robs you of your vehicle and drives away.  The carjackers car is driven away by the accomplice.

Here are some preventive actions you can take to reduce your risk of becoming a victim:

 * Before you enter your car, be alert to any activity near your car.  In malls and large parking lots, pay attention to your surroundings.  Look in and around your car.  Have your keys in hand before you arrive at your vehicle.
 *

When you get in your car, immediately lock the doors and be sure the windows are up.

 *  If you are bumped by another car, immediately call 911 from your cell phone to report the accident before you get out of your vehicle.  If the situation makes you uneasy, signal the other driver to follow you and drive to a busy, well lit area and tell the 911 operator where you are moving your vehicle and why.
 * At traffic lights and stop signs, be aware of who is around you, particularly to the sides and rear of your vehicle.
 * Leave plenty of room between your vehicle and other vehicles to allow yourself a way out.
 * Watch for people approaching your vehicle.  Be suspicious of people approaching your vehicle for change, directions, handing out fliers, etc.
 * If you are ever confronted by an armed carjacker don’t resist.
 * Give up your keys or money if demanded without resistance.
 *  Don’t argue, fight or chase the robber.
 * Call the police immediately to report the crime and provide detailed information.
