Two Volunteers with the Knox County Sheriff’s Office SCAN (Senior Citizen Awareness Network) were hit head-on by a speeding car Monday morning on Old Maryville Pike.  Twenty-seven year old Brett Spiva was speeding and lost control of his 1996 Nissan 200XS and hit the 2004 Crown Victoria. He was cited for reckless driving in the 11:18 a.m. crash.

Seventy-three year old Leo Hebert was driving the SCAN vehicle.  He was taken non-emergency to Parkwest Hospital.  Seventy-eight year old Sandra Bobinsky was treated and released from Baptist Hospital. Spiva was not injured.  All were wearing their seatbelts.  Officers on the scene said Hebert drove into a ditch trying to avoid the crash.

SCAN is made up of 75 volunteers who make wellness checks on the elderly and disabled of Knox County.  The volunteers are trained to make well-being checks, conduct home security surveys, share crime prevention information, do victim outreach, and conduct agency referrals.
