KCSO Aviation Unit Hoists Missing Man to Safety

Friday, 12 November 2010

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit helped rescue a missing hiker from Greene County Friday afternoon using a hoist.  Seventy-nine year old Oscar Brown of Washington County was reported missing Thursday night after hiking all day at Round Top Knob in Greene County. The KCSO sent a small helicopter up Friday morning to aid in the search.  Other hikers reported finding Brown and said he was exhausted and unable to walk out.   At the request of the Greene County Sheriff, KCSO flew the Huey (UH1H) which has the hoist basket, to Greene County.  Within half an hour of arriving, the rescue team deployed the hoist and brought Brown to safety.

The rescue team is specially trained to operate the hoist.  The Knoxville Police Department has two officers who are part of the team.  In fact, KPD Officer Adam Wilson rode the hoist down to rescue Brown and brought him up to the Huey.

The KCSO Aviation Unit has the only hoist in East Tennessee.  The closest one is in Nashville operated by the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
