KCSO Assisting Retailers

Wednesday, 07 December 2011

Thieves preying on shoppers and retailers will have extra eyes watching them during the holiday season.  The Knox County Sheriff’s Office is kicking off a special program today called the ALERT Task force (Area Law Enforcement Retail Theft).  Knox County Sheriff Jimmy “J.J.” Jones has formed a group of officers from patrol, detectives, and schools to patrol major shopping areas to help combat theft, car burglaries, car thefts, shoplifters, and other criminal activities that are prevalent during the holiday season.  The task force will be monitoring major shopping areas from now until after the holidays.

The task force is working very closely with retailers and has prepared plans that will benefit both the retailers and their customers.   Officers will be in marked and unmarked vehicles and inside stores.  KCSO is not releasing how many officers are on the task force or the specific places and times targeted in the shopping areas because of safety and security issues.

KCSO has also set up a special email system that will allow merchants and the KCSO to share information, including photos and suspect details, with other retailers and loss prevention personnel.

“We thank the retailers who are working with us on this project.  We believe this cooperative effort will help reduce illegal activities and make this major shopping season safer for everyone,” said Sheriff Jones.
