ALERT Task Force Making Holidays Safer

Tuesday, 13 December 2011

The ALERT (Area Law Enforcement Retail Theft) Task Force formed last week by Sheriff Jimmy “J.J.” Jones is already seeing results.  Since kicking off the special program on December 7th, officers have arrested 37 people on a variety of charges including theft, shoplifting, traffic violations, and outstanding warrants.  They have also recovered $3,233.69 in stolen merchandise.

The task force program is designed to patrol major shopping areas to help combat theft, car burglaries, car thefts, and other criminal activities that occur during the holiday shopping season.  Officers from patrol, detectives and schools make up the special force.  They are in marked and unmarked cars and are either in plain clothes or uniforms.  Where they are patrolling and what times are not being divulged for safety and security reasons.

The Sheriff’s Office has been working closely with retailers who say they welcome the extra security.  The KCSO and retailers also have an email system to share information and security.
