Suspected Bank Robber Turns Himself In

Saturday, 18 December 2010

The man suspected of robbing the BB&T Bank on Maynardville Highway late Friday afternoon turned himself into the FBI and the Knox County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday at the City County Building.  Twenty-four year old Derrick Stephen Smith of Texas Valley Road in Knoxville admitted he robbed the bank.  Officers went to his house and found the vehicle he was reportedly driving when he fled the bank.  They also recovered some of the money.

Smith is charged with aggravated robbery and his bond is set at $10,000.  He does not have a criminal history.  Smith is accused of presenting a note to a teller and verbally demanding money.  Investigators received numerous tips identifying Smith when his picture from the robbery was broadcast.

This is a joint investigation between the FBI, KPD and the KCSO, as part of the Safe Streets Task Force.
