Chemical Leak on Lexington Drive

Thursday, 27 January 2011

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office and Rural/Metro responded Thursday shortly after 6 p.m. to a chemical leak at 10512 Lexington Drive.  A tank belonging to SEC Instrumentation Services, which was in back of the business, began leaking.   Around 300 gallons of calmet calcium polysulfide leaked from the 450 gallon tank into the parking lot and into a storm drain.  Workers tried to dam the chemical with kitty litter, but the volume of the liquid solution was to too great and broke through, leaking into a second parking lot.  Officers set up a perimeter of 300 yards around the leak and evacuated approximately 60 people from the area.  The perimeter has now closed to 100 yards.  Rural/Metro has contained the leak.  A chemical clean up company is on the scene. No one has been injured.
