Suspect Charged in Woman's Murder

Friday, 28 January 2011

Detectives with the Knox County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Knoxville man for the death of a 20 year old woman in West Knox County Thursday night.   Nineteen year old Daniel Pagan of East Emory Road is charged with second degree murder and possession of schedule II drugs for resale.  He is being held at the Knox County Detention Facility on an $800,000 bond.  He is accused of killing 20 year old Dashawnta Murphy of Woodpark Drive.  It appears she was stabbed, but an autopsy is being conducted to determine exact cause of death.

According to the report, 18 year old Chelsea Garrett told KCSO Detectives that shortly after 11 p.m., the victim had planned to meet the suspect at the dead end of Cedar Park Lane in Knox County to purchase Roxycodone, a Schedule II narcotic.  Garrett stated that she was then going to park a short distance away and wait for the victim to return.  Garrett said that she and Murphy had devised a plan to steal the suspect's narcotics from him by taking them and not returning with the money.  Garrett stated that after dropping the victim off, she and another girl, who was only a passenger in Garrett's car, waited about 30 minutes.  When Murphy did not return, she drove around the area looking for her.  Garrett then drove the other girl home and returned to the area and began looking for the victim on foot and found her laying on the ground near an apartment building, dead.

Detectives arrested Pagan at his house on East Emory and took him into custody without incident.  He does not have a criminal history in Knox County.
