Man Shot in South Knox County

Wednesday, 12 June 2013

A dispute between next door neighbors led to a shooting late Wednesday afternoon.  Rural Metro transported 26 year old Brad Whaley to U.T. Medical Center.  Fifty-five year old Darrell Gene Lewelling is in custody and will be charged with aggravated assault.

According to witnesses, Lewelling showed up at Whaley’s residence at 1208 Bays Mountain Road around 4:30 in what they described as an “irate state.”  Witnesses told Knox County Sheriff’s Office Detectives that Whaley calmed Lewelling down and walked him back to his residence at 1212 Bays Mountain Road.  At that point, they said that Lewelling began shoving Whaley.  Lewelling went into his mobile home and came to the door with a handgun and shot Lewelling.   It’s not known at this time how many rounds were fired and where Whaley was shot.

Lewelling has been convicted in Knox County courts in the past on various traffic charges.
