KCSO Looking for Kidnap Suspect

Monday, 05 August 2013

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a man who kidnapped his estranged wife at gunpoint from her place of work early Monday morning.  The incident began a little after 5 a.m. as Michelle Mayes arrived at her work place on Kingston Pike.  According to the report, 41 year old Stephen Mayes of Clinton was hiding in the bushes and forced his way into her car armed with a handgun.  The suspect drove the car around and stopped at a Pilot store at 701 Campbell Station Road where he parked behind a nearby building.  The suspect threatened the victim with the gun and told her he would use duct tape to keep her quiet as he tried to force her into the trunk of the car.  She fought back and he forced her to the ground and strangled her. She managed to get away and run inside the convenience store for help.  The suspect then fled on foot.  Rural Metro transported Michelle Mayes to the Turkey Creek Medical Center.

Meanwhile, officers used a K-9 and a helicopter for over three hours searching for Mayes.  Officers called off the search around 1:30 and believe he may have gotten a ride out of the area.  KCSO took three warrants out on him:  especially aggravated kidnapping, carjacking, and aggravated assault for a total bond of $108,000.

This isn’t Mayes first brush with the law.  A report from Blount County shows that on July 7, 2013 Mayes was arrested for domestic assault.  He was released with bail bond restrictions, but the next day he broke into his wife’s apartment where he refused to come out when Blount County Sheriff’s Office Deputies arrived.  After five minutes, officers made contact with him by phone and he said he wanted to kill himself.  A few minutes later, he came out of the apartment without incident and into custody where he was taken to Blount Memorial Hospital for a mental evaluation.  He was later committed to the V.A. hospital in Murfreesboro.  Warrants are on file in Blount County for aggravated burglary, violation of order of protection, and violation of bail bond restrictions.

Mayes is described as 6 feet, 210 pounds, brown eyes, and brown hair.  Please call 911 if you know his whereabouts.
