Man Charged with Cruelty to Animals

Monday, 11 April 2011

A call from a neighbor and an investigation by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office led to animal cruelty charges against a North Knox County man on Friday, April 8th.  Officers responded to 6136 Evening Star Lane and according to reports found a Shih Tzu in the back yard that appeared to have been beaten in a cruel manner by the suspect Jeffrey Coppock.  The report said the dog had blood around the nose area, appeared to have broken bones, was breathing in short shallow breaths and was wet.  The officer observed several bloody spots inside the home as well.

Knox County Animal Control took the dog and another one, an Australian mix, to the Young Williams Animal Center for medical evaluations and treatment.  The Shih Tzun named Rosie, is in guarded condition and according to experts at the Center is not out of the woods yet.  The other dog, named Raggs, is being observed and is doing well and shows no signs of abuse.

Coppock, 44, who lives at that address was taken into custody and charged with aggravated cruelty to animals.  He was released the next day on a $2,500 bond.  He has a previous criminal history involving traffic violations.
