Detention Facility Officer Arrested for Theft

Friday, 27 September 2013

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office arrested a property officer assigned to corrections on Friday afternoon for theft of jewelry from inmate property bags at the Knox County Detention Facility.

According to the investigation, 19 year old Michael Sweat stole jewelry from the property bags of inmates on September 20 and 21 and then pawned the jewelry at Kell’s Gold Exchange on Kingston Pike for $1,130.

Sweat was hired last November and was considered on probation until his first year anniversary.  He was released under probationary period and immediately taken into custody by KCSO detectives and charged with theft on a $4,000 bond.

The investigation was triggered when a staff member released property to an inmate and discovered items missing and the bag had been tampered with.  The staff member reported it to a supervisor and the investigation began resulting in the arrest of Sweat.  All items taken were recovered from Kell’s and will be returned to their owners.
