Sex Offender Caught Tampering with Child's Birth Certificate

Monday, 09 December 2013

A registered violent sex offender who changed a child’s birth certificate to show that he was the father was in court today over the incident.  Thirty seven year old Don Allen Coleman pled guilty to tampering or fabricating evidence.  He was arrested in November 2012 after an investigation by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office Sex Offender Registry Enforcement Unit revealed Coleman tampered with the document.

Under the rules of the Tennessee Sex Offender Registry, Coleman who was convicted of aggravated sexual battery of a 9 year old, cannot live with a child that is not his biological child and cannot be a step parent.  By changing the birth certificate to reflect he was the biological father, he would have been permitted under state law to reside with the child.

In criminal court today, Coleman entered a guilty plea under a plea agreement that removed his name from the birth certificate and gave him a 4 year suspended sentence with supervised probation.

Coleman also has a trial date set for January 30, 2014 to hear 8 additional violations of the sex offender registry and perjury cases.

The KCSO Sex Offender Registry Enforcement Unit conducts investigations and compliance checks on sex offenders.  If you have information regarding a sex offender, please submit to crimetips@knoxsheriff.org or call 865-215-2243.
