Accidental Shooting inside Detention Facility Sally Port Injures 3
The Knox County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit and the Office of Professional Standards are investigating a discharge of an officer’s weapon Friday night in the Sally Port of the Detention Facility on Maloneyville Road. The incident began around 10:30 when Officer James Blankenship (on duty) accidently discharged his duty weapon (Glock 40 caliber) striking the pavement and shrapnel hitting three Intake Security Officers. Rural Metro transported one officer to U.T. Medical Center where he was treated and released for a superficial leg wound. The other two were treated in the Detention Facility Medical Unit for minor injuries. Blankenship was also transported by Rural Metro to U.T. where he was treated and released for chest pains.
Blankenship is classified in Corrections where he was assigned to prisoner pick-up duty. The preliminary investigation shows that Blankenship was at fault and is on paid administrative leave until the investigation is concluded. He has been with the KCSO since 2002.
