Details on Road Rage Shooting
The Knox County Sheriff’s Office has charged an East Knox County man in connection with a road rage incident that occurred Monday afternoon around 4 o’clock. He is 61 year old Rodney Lee Scott of 2705 Mary Emily Lane. He is charged with two counts of attempted first degree murder for a bond of $500,000 for each, one count of attempted assault with a bond of $9,000, and leaving the scene of an accident with a bond of $1,000. He is in the Knox County Detention Facility with a total bond of $1 million, ten thousand dollars. Other charges are pending awaiting outcome of blood alcohol tests.
He is accused of shooting 23 year old Tyler Lakin of Knoxville 3 times in the back and once in the wrist. Rural Metro transported him to U.T. Medical Center for treatment. Scott is also accused of striking motorcyclist J.R. Trisler, 33 of Knoxville, with his SUV prior to the shooting.
Lakin and Trisler were on motorcycles exiting off 640 onto Washington Pike when Scott nearly struck them with his SUV. They waved their arms at Scott to make sure he saw them. Witnesses say Scott made obscene gestures at the motorcyclists, stopped his SUV in the road on Millertown Pike and backed into Trisler knocking him over on the bike. A witness stopped to help and followed Scott to his address on Mary Emily. He and the two bikers stayed in the street waiting for police. Meantime, according to neighbors, Scott shouted racial slurs at the bikers, went into his garage and came out with a gun in each hand shooting at the men in the street and continued to shoot at Lakin as he lay in the road.
A detective with the KCSO was the first on the scene and took Scott into custody without incident. Detectives believe there are more witnesses to the road rage incident on the 640 exit and Washington Pike and ask that anyone who saw what happened to contact KCSO at 215-2243.
This isn’t the first time Scott has been involved in a road rage incident. He was charged with assault in March 2002 for stopping a car on Millertown Pike and assaulting one of the passengers. He was given judicial diversion in the case.
