Shoplifting Task Force Update

Friday, 24 January 2014

It was another successful season for the Knox County Sheriff’s Office Safe Holidays Task Force.  From November 25-December 27 2013, officers arrested 347 people and recovered in excess of $60,000 in stolen property.   Shoplifters were caught with merchandise worth as little at $1.60 to as much as $15,000. While the majority of the arrests were for shoplifting, the task force also served a number of outstanding warrants and arrested one man on a charge of being a fugitive from justice out of Florida. They also wrote over 100 traffic citations.

The presence of officers at major shopping centers also helped deter residual crimes such as car burglaries and purse snatchings

Sheriff Jimmy “J.J.” Jones said, “The primary focus of the task was to provide safety for the public and protect businesses and I am pleased with the results.  This is our third year and citizens and store owners are very appreciative of our efforts.”

The first year of the task force, 267 people were arrested and last year, 328 arrested.  Sheriff Jones said the task force will be out again next year during the holiday season.
