Knox Deputy Rescues Woman from House Fire

Saturday, 15 February 2014

A Knox County Deputy rescued a woman from a house fire in North Knox County Saturday afternoon and extinguished the fire. Officer Greg Black arrived at 7911 Aultom Lane in Powell shortly before 2 p.m. and found smoke rolling from the kitchen.  He heard noises inside and found Brenda Thompson inside a closet.  He got her outside and went back into the house with his fire extinguisher and while he was putting out the fire, Thompson came back into the house.  He got her back out again.  She was transported to St. Mary's North where she was treated for smoke inhalation.  Officer Black was treated on the scene for smoke inhalation and inhaling the fumes from the fire extinguisher.

Fire investigators say it was a grease fire that was contained to the stove and a cabinet.  However, there was extensive smoke damage to the rest of the house.

Officer Black was involved in another rescue on February 3 when a woman ran her car off Emory Road and into water.  The car was almost submerged when he arrived and he was able to help the woman unlock her door and pull her to safety.  Both were treated for exposure.

Black has been with the Sheriff's Office since 2006 and is a member of the SWAT Team and teaches criminal justice classes.
