Triple Homicide Suspect Captured at Days Inn

A suspect wanted for a triple homicide in Polk County, Florida is in custody following a standoff with police. According to the initial investigation, 27-year-old David Eugene Smith of Florida called dispatch at 9:44 this morning. He indicated that he was wanted in Florida for homicide and threatened suicide by cop. KCSO patrol officers responded to the Days Inn at 9240 Park West Boulevard, where Smith was staying and calling from. KCSO SWAT was deployed around 10:45 a.m. and KCSO negotiators engaged Smith for about two hours. During that time, Smith fired multiple shots through the window of room 236, where he was staying. Negotiators lost contact with him around 12:15 p.m. At 1:20 p.m., officers gassed his room and made entry. There, they found Smith had suffered an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported to UT Medical Center by Rural Metro. More information will be released as it becomes available.
